Finally! It is about time someone released Takashi Nomura’s vivid noir film, A COLT IS MY PASSPORT. This film, alone, would be reason enough to select this box set; but, the added attraction of four more clasic Nikkatsu Action flicks (including the edifying CRUEL GUN Chronicle) makes this a gotta-get for fans of hard-boiled Japanese action cinema.
Hats off to Criterion/Eclipse for stepping up and unleashing more huge Nikkatsu films!

When I received an email newsletter from Criterion announcing the release of 5 japanse noirs as fragment of their Eclipse Series my immediate response was: where is my credit card? Not everything in the genre is easily obtainable from this side of the globe, especially for the relatively older works not directed by Kurosawa and the other celebrated masters. This graceful collection of films from one of Japan’s oldest film studios is certainly a welcome contribution. The five pieces are very diverse, worth watching at least once and delivered in suited quality and obtainable for an affordable stamp.

July 22nd, 2010 — Babe Tagged Babe, Babe Streaming, Download Babe Online, Stream Babe, Watch Babe Online
Babe was a runaway success in 1995. It even got a best relate nomination and in my mind should have won. This is a incredible movie, certain to delight children from 2-100. Chris Noonan has created the recent farmyard parable. He deftly brings you into his world of talking animals centered around that most amicable of pigs, Babe. While the sheepdogs rule the farm, Babe warms the heart of sheep and dog alike, and eventually farmer Hoggett mighty to the chagrin of his wife who is counting the days to the next ample feast. Ultimately Babe is spared as farmer Hoggett comes to realize he has a most current pig on his hands. Babe finds himself welcomed into the fold, rising to the ultimately plot of being able to approach into the house on uncomfortable nights, at the expense of the house cat. All these animals are played wonderfully off each other. The voices couldn’t be better. Farmer Hoggett eventually puts Babe to the ultimate challenge, the gigantic sheepherding competition, which brings out a raucous reaction from the crowd. But Babe soon silences them. This movie has everything one could want in a children’s movie and more. It deserves its status among the classics of all time.
Several previous reviewers are dead-on. Babe, is of course, a clever, silly, touching movie. It’s one of the few movies that I and my 3-year former can both delight in over and over. But the marketing jerks at Universal have seen fit to force several lengthy advertisements on you every time you try to eye the movie. What’s more, they’ve coded them to be non-skippable, so you MUST sit through them every time you want to survey the movie (you can snappily forward, but you can’t skip over them) . This is offensive and intrusive in any dvd you’ve purchased (and arguably fallacious as it’s not disclosed on the package), but it’s even worse with a movie like Babe that’s targeted largely at kids. First, it illustrates that Universal has outright contempt for parents’ rights to choose what types of films are, or are not, appropriate for their kids. Second, if you have a runt child who really wants to inspect Babe (or whatever), it’s difficult for them to understand why they should have to sit through 15 minutes of Universal’s marketing crap before the movie starts (something that’s not lawful with numerous other children’s DVD’s) . Shame, shame Universal. I’d help you to rent, download, pirate, or borrow this DVD rather than buying it, at least until Universal ceases its offensive, dishonest marketing tactics.

If you know nothing about Tibet, the brutal occupation of that country by the Chinese, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, then this is a apt video. If you’re a Buddhist, a student of Buddhism, or more conversant with the topics above, then it might not be for you. The documentary is an A&E production, so it tends to be, IMHO, a bit shallow and incorrect at times. The Dalai Lama is not the “king” of Tibet nor does he preside over Tibetan Buddhism in the same manner that, say, the Pope does over Roman Catholics. There is some nice footage of His Holiness as a young man, including clips from his first years as a refugee in India. A few interviews with Richard Gere, Robert Thurman, Orville Schell and others round out the footage along with a few conversations with Dalai Lama. It is always a pleasure, however, to watch the Dalai Lama so I did appreciate it in spite of the critiques above. It is not what I would judge an in-depth portrait but more like a excellent line drawing.
This 45-minute program from A&E’s “Biography” series is a respectable introduction to the Dalai Lama’s life and leadership of Tibet and to the political dwelling of Tibet. It incorporates bright historical footage, including footage I hadn’t seen elsewhere of the Dalai Lama as a child and young man.

Naturally, the film sides with the Tibetans regarding the Chinese occupation of Tibet, but it does attempt to be fair. Something I learned from this film is that the Dalai Lama was initially sympathetic to some of Mao’s stated goals.
Two other obedient videos on the Dalai Lama and Tibet are “Heart of Tibet” (available only on VHS, not DVD) and “Compassion In Exile,” both of which do a better job than this video of giving a sense of the Dalai Lama as a Buddhist and as a person.
